August 21, 2024 - A Missions Mobilization Story
When the Kairos course was introduced at his theological college, most of the students in the class were not excited about having an extra class added to their timetable.
The course did not count towards their official theology certificates, and some even wondered what missions had to to with pastoral work. After all, priests are responsible for caring for a parish. What does being a priest have to do with taking the gospel to the whole world?
Like other classmates, Charles was initially unsure about giving so much extra time every week to a course that was not mandatory to obtain a certificate in theology.
After the first few classes, the climate of the class towards Kairos was changing. Students started looking forward to coming to Kairos each week. The Principal of the college reported that Kairos dominated lunchtime conversations outside of class. Even the groundskeeper said that the way the students interacted and preached was different. The college was abuzz with Kairos!
Charles worked hard and was one of 15 students who completed all the requirements to receive his Kairos certificate. So when Marianne and Vincent from EI-Uganda came back to teach missions advocacy the next term, Charles was eager and ready to learn!
During most of the classes, Charles did not say much. But when it came to the last class of second term, he said this:
What I have seen that the mission training has put in me...I didn't know that we have different gifts and talents [for missions]. I may not be gifted in preaching, but I may be gifted in giving. I can support. You will find in a church there is no portion of the church budget for missions activities. And yet, it is our responsibility. Missions starts with me. I didn't know that I was part of the mission. I've learned a lot through this missions course. It's changed my life.
Charles learned the very important truth that "missions starts with me". As a future priest, he plans to use his role to mobilize his whole church for missions.
