November 6, 2024 - A Girls' Hygiene Ministry Story
My name is Lucy. I'm a P7 student [final year of primary school].
I came to know Emmanuel International when they came to distribute sanitary pads in our school.
I used to miss classes for 4 days every month when I had my menstruation. When my menstrual period started abruptly in class, I would be overwhelmed with fear. I didn't participate in the learning process. I was very shy to raise my hand. I could be the last to leave the class at break for fear of people noticing.
When Emmanuel International supported me with sanitary pads and knickers, the whole story changed.
Now, I don't miss classes. I concentrate more in class without any fear of leakage. Now I'm able to understand all the teachings just like any other person in the class. I feel my life is easy during school time. I'm comfortable. I'm able to participate in games and sports because I'm sure I'm safe and protected.

Besides all this, I attended lessons facilitated by Emmanuel International. I learnt about my body changes and how to manage menstruation. I also learnt that I am specially created in the image of God, and that God loves me just like He loves boys, and that menstruation is not a punishment from God but a gift from Him.
Emmanuel International has also helped to talk to my parents who were previously unconcerned about supporting girls. I feel and see my parents are responding to cater for my basic needs - not just me, but other sisters of mine. My mother now even makes sanitary pads from local materials and provides them to me to use during my period. I thank EI staff for teaching my mother how to make sanitary pads.
With all the teachings I got from EI, I'm able to pass on the knowledge and teach other girls how to make reusable pads. I also share with them the love of God to help them understand their self-worth. I will also help to teach my sisters about their body changes.
